The Kenmore Rugby Club Boys Middle School side will officially begin their season this week as practices get underway at Lindbergh Elementary School on Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 4:30 to 6:30pm for boys currently in grades 6-8.
Leading the team this season as interim Middle School Head Coach is John Bressette. John is a former player with Kenmore Rugby and is currently the club's youth and flag rugby Director of Coaching. During his time in that position, John has worked with many of the club's players including several currently on the high school team. Assisting Bressette will be John Kelly and Demarian Walker-Johnson, two more former Kenmore Rugby players and current Flag & Youth Coaches. Kelly and Walker-Johnson have been assistant coaches in our Flag Rugby and our Introduction to Tackle Rugby programs for the past three seasons working alongside Bressette. All three are USA Rugby certified and will be working under the direction of Kenmore Rugby Coaching Coordinator Mackenzie Doolittle.
"To have that continuity in our coaching ranks is an important part of our plan to grow the club." said Doolittle. "Knowing many of the players already will help our young coaches as they transition the boys from flag rugby to full tackle." he added.
Also new this year is the addition of several new middle school boys teams across the state and RugbyNY's first Upstate Middle School division. Teams include Kenmore, Orchard Park, Fairport, McQuaid Jesuit, Corning, CNY Rugby, and Albany/Saratoga. All of the teams will begin practices in April with teams taking turns hosting "mini-tournaments" from the end of April thru mid June.
"I know I speak for the other John, and Demarian when I say we're excited to be part of the new Upstate middle school competition, and we can't wait to meet all of the other teams this season." said Bressette.
Game dates and locations are being finalized and will be posted as soon as they are confirmed. As always, our full calendar can be found on our web site www.kenmorerugby.org/calendar
Founded in 2004, the Kenmore Rugby Club is WNY's oldest and largest youth and high school rugby club with over 100 active players in grades K-12.
