"Conrad stole my quote"
Coach Steve Caruana joined Kenmore Rugby in 2012, accepting an invitation from Coach Conrad to join the club after nearly 20 years of playing rugby.
A WNY native and Canisius High grad, Steve started his rugby career at LeMoyne College where he was a NYS College All-Star in each of his four years and captain of the Koonducks in his junior and senior years. In addition to being a NYS College All-Star, Steve was also selected to the Northeast Collegiate All-Stars in 1996 and 1997.
Upon graduating from LeMoyne, Caruana relocated to Tampa while earning his Master's Degree in Education at the University of South Florida. While in Florida, Caruana was a member of the St. Petersburg Pelicans and was named twice to the Florida All-Stars and the Rugby South Developmental Team, representing the team against Jamaica in 1998. After receiving his masters, Caruana spent two seasons abroad, first playing for the Johannesburg Wanderers in South Africa, and then with the Lurgan Rugby Club in Northern Ireland.
Caruana relocated back to Buffalo in 2000, where he joined the Buffalo Rugby Club. While with the BRC, Steve was named assistant captain twice and played a prominent role with teams that captured two Midwest Championships, and made eight consecutive trips to the USA Rugby's D2 round of 16. Steve was selected as club MVP three times by his teammates and was also named as Man of the Year in 2005.
An injury pushed Caruana to the sidelines for his first coaching role at Buffalo State College from 2003-2005. During his tenure at Buff State Steve led the club to three straight Eastern Division Titles compiling a record of 18-4 before resuming his playing career until he ultimately retired from competitive play in 2012.
Since joining Kenmore Rugby in 2012, Steve has helped lead the club to the RugbyNY Championships in 4 of the last 5 years, with the team being ranked in the Top 50 for High School Clubs in 2015 by the Goff Rugby Report. Steve was also Head Coach of the Canisius College Men from 2013-2016 winning the Upstate NSCRO Western Division Championship in 2015, and was appointed Head Coach of the Buffalo Rugby Club in 2018.
Steve works as a corporate recruiter for Catholic Health. He recently completed his USA Rugby Level 300 certification and he also holds Red Cross First Aid and CRP certifications. He resides in the Town of Tonawanda with his dog McQueen.
